Using Gorilla.sc for your Dissertation Project
Over the years the PsychTech have provided guides and videos on how to use Gorilla.sc and how to create experiments and surveys. However, the issue with this is that platform Gorilla.sc has gone through various changes and shifts both as an organisation and more importantly on their website. Therefore, creating guides by us is essentially not of great time usage for us. Therefore, we advise students to follow the Help & Support page which is heavily updated by the Gorilla.sc team itself.
Here you can find the link to the Documentation & Support Page and here you will find comprehensive guides and also sample projects. If you wish you to discuss anything regards to Gorilla.sc or a brief introduction then book us on our Booking System here.
Gorilla.sc is an ideal platform for designing interactive behavioral experiments, online tasks, and complex academic questionnaires because it provides precise millisecond timing, advanced branching and randomization, and seamless data exports compatible with R, SPSS, or Python.
You can request an account to the platform by completing this form here and you can find the website by typing into your search engine Gorilla.sc or use the widget at the bottom right to access all the quick links. Once you complete the form you will be asked to share your Project URL to the technicians on another form. Ensure you do this in case you lose access to your student account and follow the appropriate due diligence.
The Psychology technicians have also created an Open Materials repositoryon Gorilla.sc holding several psychometric scales for ease of use for students who wish to implement and focus on solely building their experiments whilst having the psychometric scales on hand and ready to implement into their study.
Essential Checklist for Experimental Design
Nonetheless, I have written a generic guide here that hopefully will not require that much change in the future. For further details please visit the support page or guides on launching your study
Phase 1: Task Design & Logic (Task Builder)
Trial Structure & Canvas Layout
Set up explicit fixations/crosses with clear display durations (e.g., 500 ms).
Ensure response buttons or keypresses are bound to explicit zones.
Define explicit screen bounds and scaling so elements render cleanly across varying monitor sizes.
Stimulus Management
- Upload stimulus files (images, audio, video) using consistent, clear file names.
- Verify media preload settings (e.g., set critical visual or audio stimuli to preload before trial display to prevent timing lag).
Spreadsheet Construction
- Map columns directly to task zones (e.g.,
stimulus_image,correct_response).
Add a
randomise_blocksorrandomise_trialscolumn to control trial sequence per participant.Specify a
displaycolumn to direct Gorilla which screen layout to call for each row.
Data & Metric Logging
Check that Reaction Time (RT), accuracy logging are toggled ON for response screens.
Check that psychometric measures are obtaining appropriate values and follow the exact formatting
- Set up correct key bindings and response tags (e.g.,
space= target,f/j= binary choice).
Phase 2: Experiment Flow & Logic (Experiment Tree)
Participant Routing
Include an Participant Information & Informed Consent screen at the very beginning.
Add a Demographics Questionnaire (or screening checks) prior to the core task.
Place Instructions nodes with brief comprehension checks before major tasks.
Randomization & Counterbalancing
Use Randomiser nodes to assign participants to conditions or task orders evenly.
Use Branching nodes to divert participants based on accuracy, demographics, or consent answers.
Data Quality & Rejection Controls
Add an Attention Check or Catch Trial node to screen out low-effort responses.
Set up a Branching / Reject path for participants who fail attention checks or decline consent.
Recruitment Platform Integration
Place a Redirect / Finish node at the end with appropriate completion URLs (e.g., Prolific, CloudResearch, or Qualtrics parameters).
Pass participant query parameters (
PROLIFIC_PID,STUDY_ID,SESSION_ID) into Gorilla embedded variables.
Phase 3: Pilot Testing & Data Audit
Technical Validation
Test the experiment link in Preview Mode across multiple browser types (Chrome, Safari, Firefox).
Check the task on both desktop and mobile layouts (or set device restrictions in the Experiment Tree settings).
Data Export Verification
Run a full mock session and export the Data CSV.
Confirm that key columns (
Response,Reaction Time,Spreadsheet Row,Correct,Participant ID) are present and accurate.Verify that spreadsheet values parse cleanly without missing data or mismatched headers.
Phase 4: Launching your Experiment
As previously mentioned, once you are ready to launch your study then follow this link here for a full guide to make sure you have followed everything: https://support.gorilla.sc/support/launching-your-study/index
We have inserted the guide above so you can get the full information above. However, when you are indeed ready to launch your experiment then please watch this video set by gorilla.sc: https://support.gorilla.sc/support/launching-your-study/create-to-launch#launchyourexperiment
Finally, once you have requested the Tokens the Psychology Technicians will accept your token requests and then you will have to accept the tokens by requesting that same number again. It’s a little bit confusing I know but this is how Gorilla.sc is set up!
Good Luck in your data collection!!!
